This week we are listening to Yo-Yo Ma play the Prelude to JS Bach Cello Suite No 1 in G Major.  Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer of the Baroque era.  He was born in 1685 in Germany, and lived until 1750.  Coming from a musical family, JS Bach was known in his lifetime as a harpsichord and organ player.  Today, we remember his music for strings, piano, harpsichord, and organ, including this solo suite for cello, played by Yo-Yo Ma.  Yo-Yo Ma is an American cellist, who was born in 1955 in France to Chinese parents.  He started performing cello at the age of just 4 1/2 and has won many awards in his career, including 19 Grammy Awards.  In addition to Western classical music, Yo-Yo Ma is also part of The Silk Road Ensemble, which brings together musicians from the countries that were historically linked by the Silk Road for trading purposes between Europe and China.
